A Spanish Foreigner Identity Card is a document that proves the legal status of a foreigner in Spain. It is issued to foreigners that have been authorized to stay in Spain for a period longer than six months.
In Spanish, the card is known as tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE). It contains your information, name and surname, the period of validity, and a unique number, known as the Foreigner Identity Number.
The first step in moving to Spain is to get the NIE Number. This number (“Número de Identidad de Extranjero”) is the basic identification with which you will be able to conduct any kind of legal procedure in the country, such as opening a bank account, buying a house or car, starting your company or getting your residence permit.
If you don’t want to get involved in starting a business from scratch, buying an existing business may be the answer, especially if you’re considering a business such as a shop, a bar or a restaurant.
The notary is a professional within the Spanish law system and his/ her main function is to certify Spanish documents ensuring that private agreements fulfil certain legal criteria. The Spanish notary is involved in legalising agreements and contracts and uses a stamp and signature to endorse them.
